Good Luck to Villa Joseph Marie H.S Soccer Team!

The Jems are playing for the state championship tonight! I wish I could go to the game tonight to cheer the girls on to a victory. I have so many great memories from my four years at Villa going to the game in Hershey. Everyone would make T-shirts and paint their faces and as the bus pulled up to the stadium, we would open all of the windows and cheer the entire way into the parking lot. And of course, we would cheer the ENTIRE game. I hope these girls have been the same passion we had and will represent the school with pride!

In other news, my favorite non-pro sports season has officially started…COLLEGE BASKETBALL! Seriously, I love college basketball so much. I still follow La Salle as best I can and I love watching as many games as I can. Hopefully, the La Salle Explorers will have a good season and maybe make an A-10 playoff run this year! Hey, a girl can hope right? Anyway, college basketball is probably one of the most fun sports to watch and I am so excited the season has started.

Finally, because I have to mention something about it, I am absolutely disgusted with the Jets right now. Hi, you let Tim Tebow, who can’t throw a football accurately to save his life, to run 95 yards for the final-minute, game winning touchdown. Seriously? Thanks for blowing your playoff chances boys. You better win out the rest of the season to make up for all the crappy games you’ve played so far this season. Inexcusable. I have never been more disappointed to call myself a Jets fan as I am right now.

Two Big Wins in the Soccer World Yesterday!

Ok, so maybe only one was a big win in the eyes of the soccer world. But either way, both the U.S men’s national team and Villa’s team won yesterday and those are both big wins in my eyes!

I am so happy the U.S team FINALLY won a game. I mean really, two wins in the span of the new coaching regime is not at all impressive. There have been too many losses and I am not impressed with the team right now. They lost to France last week! Who loses to France? They’re terrible! Anyway. I really hope that long term the U.S team dominates. Because right now, they pretty much stink.

In related news, the Villa Jems won their semi-final last night and are now heading to the state championship game on Friday! Congrats on the win ladies! I am so happy for this team. They have been playing quality soccer and are undefeated going into this game. I really hope they win the championship since none of the girls on the team have ever experienced that. You don’t realize until a moment like this how good you had it. When I was at Villa the soccer team was expected to the win the state championship every year. We were that good. After a five year absence, it’s time for the PIAA soccer championship trophy to return to the hall(s) of Villa! (The school just to be literally a one floor hallway. It has since expanded but it will always be one hallway to me!) Good luck on Friday Jems! Bring that trophy home!

Jems win again!

Ok so I know I’ve been posting a lot about the Villa soccer team but this is big news! The Jems won their first round PIAA Class One Division AA playoff game last night. As this is the first time in five years that the team has made it to the state playoffs, every win should be celebrated. Even though the team is undefeated right now, wins are not guaranteed.

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when I went to check the score in the paper this morning. There was a chance that the team had lost since none of these girls have been to the state playoffs before. That’s a lot of pressure.I know during my time at Villa it was expected to not only make it to the state playoffs but to win the state championship every year. (Ok, so we were a little cocky. But honestly, every year we had the team to back it up!) From reading this article, it really sounds like these girl’s know what they’re doing. I think Villa soccer is getting it’s swagger back!

Villa next plays in the Quarterfinal on Saturday so let’s hope this win streak continues! Go Villa!

Congrats to the Jems!

Last night the Villa Jems won the District One Class AA District Title over Gwynedd-Mercy Academy. According to this article, Villa has not won a district title in five years. Wow. Again, I haven’t really closely followed Villa sports since I graduated (5 years ago!) but when I was there the soccer team literally dominated every year. Also, I know I said before they were in Class AAA but clearly that was wrong. So apparently, they moved up for a season or two and then moved back down to AA. Anyway, I have a good feeling about this team. Not only are they undefeated this season (20-0 and counting!) but they know how to win. How do I know this? Because last night’s win was 2-1 OT Victory. Villa took an early 1-0 lead, gave up a goal, and was shut out in the second half. For a team that won it’s semi-final game 8-0 you would think they would panic. And yet they remained calm and won it out. So, let’s go Jems! See you in Hershey!

Shout out to the VJM Soccer Team!

Congrats to the Villa Joseph Marie H.S Soccer team! 16-0! And, according to these ESPN Powerade Fab 50 Rankings, VJM ranks 4th. This is a pretty big deal (at least to me) because Villa is a really small school. Like, 400 students in the entire school small (did I mention it’s an all-girls Catholic school?) Additionally, they’ve had 11 straight shut-outs. Good job girls!

When I was a student there, the soccer team was THE team on campus. They went to the State Championship in Hershey every year and won 3 of my 4 years. After I left, they moved up a division and started competing against bigger schools. I’ll admit, I didn’t follow as closely, as more years passed since my graduation. I do know they struggled a bit and weren’t guaranteed a trip to the championship game (I say guaranteed because the team was always so good they always made it to that game). However, I was recently reminded of how good Villa soccer is when my local paper had the cover story of the Sports section dedicated to their 16-0 record. It’s good to see that Villa’s soccer team is back and is getting the attention it got when I was a student there.

So, I’ll end this post with this: LET’S GO JEMS! I hope you girls bring the State Championship back to Villa!
